Sub2Learn is a free tool that translates movie/TV subtitles based on your English level. It translates only the words and lines above your level and keeps the rest in English, so you learn English by watching while only getting help on genuinely new vocabulary.
No. When you extract subtitles from an MKV/WebM video, the file is read entirely inside your own browser and never leaves your device. Image-subtitle OCR also runs locally. Only the extracted text is sent out for the translation step.
Subtitle files: SRT and ASS. Video files (for in-browser extraction): MKV and WebM. Inside a video, text subtitle tracks (SubRip, ASS/SSA, WebVTT) are extracted directly, and Blu-ray PGS image subtitles are OCR-ed locally. DVD VobSub is not supported yet.
Yes. Translation is performed server-side using the Bing translator by default, with automatic Google fallback. Because the server does the fetching, it works even where Google is not directly accessible.
Each level corresponds to a list of the most frequent English words (about 300 for Kindergarten up to about 6000 for CET-6 / High school). A subtitle line whose words are all within your level stays in English; a line with any word above your level is translated in full.
